WHO ARE WE?
We are one of over 150 groups across Canada who fundraise on behalf of the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF). The PAGO group was formed in December, 2006 after Stephen Lewis came to speak at our local high school about the need to support African grandmothers who have many challenges raising their orphaned grandchildren as many of their parents died of HIV/AIDS and now the extra burden of COVID.
Our group’s name is an acronym of PA (Port Alberni) combined with a part of the African word for grandmother – “GOGO”.
It is believed that between 40-60% of orphans live in grandmother – headed households. These grandmothers need support caring for their grandchildren while maintaining their own health.
With Canadian grandmothers’ support, African grandmothers have become the linchpin of survival for their families and communities. They have become activists and advocates for rights and protection. They have also become small business owners with the help of funding. They have also become counsellors and community leaders in their knowledge of the diseases that affect their overall well being.

WHAT DO WE DO?
PAGO exists to support SLF with the important work they do with the African grassroots organizations in sub – Saharan Africa. We share ideas with other BC groups especially regarding fundraising, heightening awareness in our community and information gathering. This Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign holds meetings with other island groups and has had opportunities to meet with SLF staff and African grannies at national meetings.
We have had monthly meetings since 2006 (4th Monday of each month) and fundraise mostly through garage, craft, bake sales and spring teas and fall luncheons. Our yearly goal is to raise $10,000 for SLF/African Grannies.
New members are always welcome. Our current president is Janet Russell and she can be contacted at jirussell1953@gmail.com for meeting dates and times.
